Christian Studies

Through an orderly approach to the Bible, honoring the natural learning stages of grammar, logic, and rhetoric, Highlands Latin seeks to enable students to study theology and thus worship God with all their being. Our approach is to be a broadly Christian school, not teaching denominational doctrine, but rather, teaching Bible literacy, history, and reading works which allow students to grapple with theology themselves. We believe it is the responsibility of the family and the church to provide specific guidance on doctrinal issues.

Our focus for grammar students is on Bible literacy. The “grammar” of the Bible is basic knowledge, including books of the Bible and finding them quickly, specific content of the Old and New Testaments, historical background, and biblical terminology. Our logic stage students wrap up their understanding of the Bible by doing a survey of the entire Book. They will then stand on the shoulders of giants as they engage with some of the classic texts of early Christian history. Our rhetoric stage students focus on reasoning and critical thinking skills, with which they will broadly engage in apologetics. They learn about communication and persuasion, and engage in debate. They also encounter biblical hermeneutics in some depth, which is the art and science of biblical interpretation.

"Theology is a serious quest for the true knowledge of God, undertaken in response to His self-revelation, illumined by Christian tradition, manifesting a rational inner coherence, issuing in ethical conduct, resonating with the contemporary world and concerned for the greater glory of God."  --John Stott
